“This space has been sacred. It’s been protected and engaged in for almost 40 years.”

-Lu Thain

We are proud to be featured in “Bloom Where You Are Planted,” a new documentary highlighting community gardens across Philadelphia, including Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden and UBC Garden of Eden, and their impact as a source of nutrition, education, and community building.

The film recently premiered at the Big Picture Film Festival, hosted by our friends at One Art Community Center. It’s also streaming on YouTube for free.

In the film, you’ll learn about Philly Earth, our STEAM-based environmental education, urban farming, and agricultural workforce development program. Two environmental team members, Lu Thain, our Director of Environmental Programs, and Denzel Thompson, our Farm Manager and Philly Earth Teaching Artist, are interviewed for the film. Denzel talks about the importance of promoting creativity and positivity for young people at The Village.

Community Member Shaheed “Ro” Davis is also featured, sharing how we must create a cleaner, safer world for our children’s future.

“We’re trying to bring that old feeling back, where you felt safe. Clean communities are safe communities; that’s what I always say.”

Corrie Spellman-Lopez, Education Coordinator at our partner, Philadelphia Orchard Project, talks about how food brings people together. She shares her hope that more people will get drawn into these spaces and gain more food sovereignty.
