Teen Leadership Corps (TLC) is a select group of Village students who demonstrate a desire to better their skills in leadership and entrepreneurship, civic engagement and college readiness. This program is generously supported by the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation.
Overview
Civic Engagement
Civic engagement begins the process of facilitating positive changein our neighborhoods. TLC students organize service-learning projects designed to beautify abandon lots, mentor younger residents and support community art. Students also plan and implement community events and report on the neighborhood’s creative economy by interviewing local merchants, artists and civic organizations.
Leadership/Entrepreneurship
TLC includes organized lecture and workshops led by working professionals. The teens also go off-sitel to view cultural exhibitions, partake in lectures and work hands-on with business professionals and internationally renowned artists. These experiences prepare students to lead studio workshops, participate in The Village’s Youth Media Lab and hold office in their self-run government.
College Readiness
In preparation for high school graduation, students work with Village mentors to research post-secondary options as well as vocational schools and youth service corps. Students form peer review groups and discuss college applications, share drafts of admission essays and provide feedback in assembling artistic portfolios. Resources for SAT preparation, federal aid and scholarships counseling and additional tutoring are available year-round.
